Greenland is the largest island in the world that is not a continent with the majority of the island located above the Arctic Circle. The ski touring in Eastern Greenland is considered to be one of the last frontiers of ski touring. It is a difficult place to reach, but the solitude and remote pristine mountains make it well worth the effort. There are few places in the world that in order to access the ski touring you are required to take a plane, a boat, possibly a snowmobile, and even a dogsled. This is a truly unique ski touring adventure. You will have a glimpse into the life in a small fishing village in Eastern Greenland as well as exploring the area around a remote mountain hut.

Overview

Ski Touring Greenland,

The journey begins with an international flight from Reykjavik, Iceland to the small international airport of Kulusuk in Eastern Greenland. The journey then continues by boat to the small fishing and hunting village of Kuummiut. After spending a night here the adventure continues with a 5 hour dog sled ride to a remote mountain hut located on the edge of the Karale Glacier with ocean views.

The hut will be the base for the next five days of ski touring. This location provides many different options for ski touring. There are steep couloirs, beautiful steep open faces, and mellow glacier runs surrounded by the wild Greenlandic mountains. There is plenty of exploring to be done and first descents to be had. Springtime in Eastern Greenland consists of long periods of high pressures with cool temperatures and low pressure systems coming in from the NE. With the long days it is common to have spring like condition on southerly aspects and powder skiing on northerly aspects giving more variety to the skiing.

Eastern Greenland is still considered a incredibly wild, and remote place of the world. It is important to be aware of this and recognize that conditions can change very quickly. Being flexible with daily plans is extremely important. The isolation and wild mountains of Greenland is also what makes it such an unique ski touring destination.

Day 1:

Fly from Reykjavik, Iceland to the small international airport of Kulusuk, Greenland. Jump on an enclosed boat for the journey to Kuummiut, Greenland. After checking into a basic guesthouse accommodation for the evening the afternoon will be spent either exploring the small town and meeting the locals or a short ski tour to stretch our legs.

Day 2:

Our journey to the ski tour hut continues! In the morning all of our bags and equipment are put into snowmobiles. We will be using the local form of transportation: dog sleds. The dog sled ride into the remote mountain hut takes about 5 hours. Once we have arrived we will settle in and have an afternoon safety briefing and beacon practice. After this there might be time for a short ski tour.

Day 3, 4, 5,

Our days will be spent exploring the areas around the hut. There is a variety of different skiable terrain depending on weather and conditions. Plenty of steep couloirs to be skied as well as wide open bowls. Unnamed peaks to be climbed and spectacular views of the Kaarale Glacier and the Greenland Ice Cap. We will spent the days ski touring in the mountains and the evenings rehashing the day over hot meals in the cozy hut.

Day 6:

We will meet the dog sleds for the 5 hour journey back to Kuummiut and then we will again board the boat back to Kulusuk. The evening will be spent in a small guesthouse in Kulusuk.

Day 7:

In the morning we will take the small plane back to Iceland.

Lodge & Dinning

Accommodation:

The first night of our trip will be spent in a basic cabin in the small fishing village of Kuummiut, Greenland. The cabin does not have running water and provides an outhouse for the toilet. There will be an opportunity to take a hot shower at the community center if needed. Kuummiut is a traditional Greenlandic village with colourful houses dotting the white landscape along the ocean. This is a wonderful opportunity to have a look into the traditional way of life in Eastern Greenland.

The bulk of our trip will be spent at a remote mountain hut 5 hours by dog sled from the village of Kuummiut. The hut is located in deep in the Greenlandic mountains in an unreal setting. The hut is small, but will comfortably sleep 10 people. There is diesel heat and a propane stove for cooking. There are some large windows in the hut and a great deck with incredible views. Even the view from the outhouse doesn’t disappoint.

The final night of our trip will be spent in a three star hotel in Kulusuk with views of both the mountains and the ocean. Each of the rooms are double occupancy with twins beds and include ensuite bathroom with hot showers. There is also a restaurant and small bar in the hotel.
